APN’S Favorite Movie Inspired by a Book

As an avid reader, it is very difficult to pick my favorite book that was turned into a movie or television show, as there are so many, and in some cases I love the book so much, but the movie isn’t as good. One of the most enjoyable adaptations from book to screen, for me, must be Harry Potter. I think in the case of all these stories, the screenplays were well adapted from the books. These movies keep the most important aspects of the books and stay true to the general story. That said, I wish they had made the last book in the series one movie instead of splitting it into two. I will also give honorable mention to “The Hunger Games,” because that is another great adaptation of a series from book to screen.

My favorite movie adaptation of a book has to be “The Devil Wears Prada.” It was written under the same name by Lauren Weisberger and adapted into the iconic film a few years later. I’m usually left disappointed by most movie adaptations, but this one was superior to the book in every way. The cast was completely stacked, and Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt particularly gave really nuanced performances that expanded on the book characters. They delivered their lines with a combination of their usual skill plus impeccable comedic timing that made the movie so fun to watch. I have seen it countless times, and I still find it timeless.

Growing up, “The Hunger Games” book and film were popular. Within that genre of young adult adventure, also came “Divergent” and “The Maze Runner.” Both books followed kids trying to survive in a world much different from our own. These series started off as books and were later transformed into movies. Both movies were successful and later came out with sequels. To this day, I still go back and rewatch these films. In my opinion, the books are much better, but I will always enjoy seeing my imagination come to life on screen.

In fifth grade I had finally fallen in love with reading when we read the book “Wonder.” The book was always my comfort read, and spoke of a little boy who looked different, which caused struggle in his life. I had been able to relate when I was younger, never feeling like I fit in. The book was very successful and powerful to read. Then in 2017, they turned the book into a movie. Although greatly made, I still prefer the book to film. However the book does have an unfair advantage of having less limits on its storytelling. So I’d suggest either to anyone interested in a coming of age story.
