It’s dough! Savory, tasty dough. Bagels bring joy to people’s day. The traits of the ideal bagel depend on the eater. The differences range from the dough, water, creativity, toppings or toastiness. When asked where the best bagels come from, most people’s response was their local bagel shop.

Tayler King from Middletown, N.Y. — Her immediate response was “Downtown Bagels,” which is located in Middletown. “I guess they aren’t too soft or too tough and don’t need to be toasted,” she added after recounting the different types of cream cheese the shop offers. She recommends the bialy bagel, which has caramelized onions and poppy seeds in the middle with cream cheese.
Christine Burke from Croton-On-Hudson, N.Y. — Burke considers Bagels on Hudson’s offerings the best bagels she’s ever had. She says that when toasted, they are the right kind of chewy, and the shop’s cream cheese soaks into the bagel. Burke recommends a toasted plain bagel with veggie cream cheese.
Joshua Saint-Vil from Middletown, N.Y. — “The best bagels come from Downtown Bagels,” he said. “The crunch of their bagels is godly, and they are so generous with things like cream cheese and bacon.” He recommends those toppings on an everything bagel.
Sanyei Rivas from New York, N.Y. — Rivas believes Mike’s Bagels on 168th Street has the best bagels. He says that what makes them so good is the large selection of freshly baked bagels “complemented by every type of cream cheese spread that you can ever imagine.” He recommends the nova lox on a poppy-seed bagel. The sandwich has lox, cream cheese, tomatoes, capers and onions.
Shaunessy Laclair from Massena, N.Y. — Laclair compared bagels from various locations in Long Island to those from The Bagelry in Potsdam, N.Y. “They are good, but they are almost too much,” she said about Long Island bagels. She believes that the everything bagels from The Bagelry are just enough to fill you up and are “the best bagels” she’s ever had. She recommends the everything bagel with cream cheese.
Anthony Votta from Deer Park, N.Y. — “Dooleys,” he said. “They are homemade bagels, and the quality is great. They can be over or under toasted, but when they get it right, they’re great.” He says the shop’s prices are fair, and staff give generous amounts of crunchy bacon and cream cheese. Votta recommends a sausage, egg and cheese on an everything bagel.

The best way to find the perfect bagel is to try them all! Wherever you go, there will be a bagel shop with its signature spread. There’s a bagel for every meal. You can have lox bagels, rainbow bagels, pizza bagels — the fun never ends.
Live, love, bagels.
