With most things that have advantages, comes disadvantages. When it comes to living off campus at college, where there are no parents or at home responsibilities, there is also no more home cooked meals from mom or dad.
It’s time for you to make your own food.
Some students may not always have the funds to go food shopping every week. Therefore, they are forced to eat whatever is in their kitchen for the next week, or until they get some money to go food shopping. At a certain point, people get tired of eating the same thing over and over again. So if you’re looking for three different meals that can be easily cooked and is affordable for college students, read below.
Ramen Cheese Burger
At first, a Ramen Cheese Burger does not sound as appetizing as you would think, but it is definitely something worth trying. It is also really easy to make if you have no money to go grocery shopping or order take out.
What will you need
- Two bags of Ramen Noodles
- Hamburger meat
- Macaroni and cheese
How to make it
- Start making the macaroni and cheese (all the instructions are on the box)
- Get your hamburger meat, and if you want, put whatever seasoning you would like on it to get your preferable flavor
- Put the hamburger meat in the cooking pan and let it cook the way you want it (rare, medium, raw, etc)
- Start boiling the water for your ramen.
- Put the ramen in the boiling water for about 10 minutes. You do not want the ramen to fully deteriorate but you want it soft enough so you can put the burger in between the ramen.
Paul DeCarlo, SUNY Plattsburgh senior, has made this before and was intrigued on how it came out.
“Ramen Cheeseburger was actually pretty good. I was definitely skeptical at first but it actually came out really tasty with the different type of flavors,” DeCarlo said.
Pasta with Beef and Syrup
This dish starts off as a regular meal that people usually eat at dinner. Introducing syrup into this mix changes the game entirely. Adding syrup to pasta and beef is a different taste that can change someone’s appetite for the dish.
What you will need
- Pasta (any kind of your choosing)
- Ground Beef
- Maple Syrup
How to make it
- Take your ground beef and start seasoning it
- Get your pan ready for the ground beef
- Start boiling the water for the pasta
- Put the pasta in the pan, let it cook, then strain the water out
- Top off the pasta and beef with maple syrup
McAnthony Thimote, SUNY Plattsburgh senior, suggested this dish and said it was an interesting, yet satisfying meal.
“I know it sounds crazy but it is actually good, I am always cooking in the kitchen and I thought why not try something different,” Thimote said.
Ramen and Cheese
This dish sounds pretty interesting because it is a combination of the two foods every college student has in their room: ramen noodles, and macaroni and cheese. Most college students have made ramen and macaroni and cheese for dinner, but never combined them.
What you will need
- Ramen Noodles
- Macaroni and cheese
How to make it
- Start making the mac and cheese
- Boil the water for the ramen
- When the macaroni is almost done, put the ramen in the pot and let it cook
- Do not put the flavor in the ramen unless you want to
- Strain the water from the noodles and put in the mac and cheese
Jason Muller, SUNY Plattsburgh junior, said that he always likes trying something new in the kitchen.
“Growing up my father and I would always try the weirdest dishes, I would wake up, walk downstairs and my dad would have something new for me to try,” Muller said.
At first glance some of these dishes here do not sound very appealing. You also might be wondering why a person would want to eat this. The saying, “when you are hungry you will eat just about anything,” is applied here. Remember, don’t knock it till you try it.
