For some aspiring artists, Etsy.com wasn’t where they started, but a means of expanding business. One such artist is Marco Solar, who started his art career with his wife, Maya, during a five year stay in Domburg in the Netherlands. They sought inspiration from their favorite Netherlands beach, often capturing the beauty of ocean waves. Years later, they moved to France, near Bayonne, where they toured every art gallery they could find. The Solar’s art combines different art techniques using the lighting of Hossegor, France and the Netherlands.
“We both love art,just as we love the ocean,” Solar said. “Painting and discovering new art pieces have become a big part of our free time.”
The Solars chose Etsy.com because of the site’s high popularity; however, it isn’t their only art-market website. The only hardship the Solars have faced, from their point of view, is whether or not a particular website sells their art. The Solars have been on Etsy.com since May 30, 2015.
Other artists chose Etsy as a means of self-promotion. One of these artists is Leonid Afremov. Afremov has been painting since he was a child. His teachers encouraged him to hone his talent and he continued studying to this day. Afremov saw Etsy.com as a viable outlet to sell art, joining the site back in 2013.
“I prefer to represent myself and not rely on art dealers or galleries,” Afremov said.
Afremov also forged his own website, www.afremov.com, where he sells oil paintings and prints. Afremov also works with amazon.com, ebay, houzz.com and other websites. His art work focuses mainly on capturing the natural beauty of varying subjects such as landscapes, city views, flowers, the ocean, parks, people, etc.
