APN’s Best Memories From Winter Break

I didn’t get up to much other than working in a deli over break. However, one moment from break that stood out was my trip down to NYC before Christmas. While in Manhattan, I had perhaps the best gnocchi I’ll ever have in Hell’s Kitchen. Of course, we also had to see Rockefeller Plaza and Times Square. Most importantly, however, we got to spend a great deal of time in the LEGO store. That’s not to say the rest of the break wasn’t a good time. The deli and my co-workers there are some of my closest friends. It was also great to spend time with my family for the holidays, although my sister brought home a black lab puppy named Luna who is anything but relaxing to be around.

Secret Santa is a popular traditional for getting together with loved ones. Photo by The Retro Store on Unsplash.

I didn’t get up to anything too crazy over the break. I spent a lot of time at home with my family. If I had to pick a favorite memory it would be the secret Santa get-together my friends and I had over the break. Every year we all get together and hang out, exchange gifts, and just enjoy each other’s company. It was nice.

Dancing your way into the new year with those you love is a great way to bounce back from recovery after a tonsillectomy. Photo by Kajetan Sumila on Unsplash.

My break mostly consisted of recovering from a much needed and long awaited tonsillectomy, which despite getting to eat lots of ice cream and mac and cheese, was not a thrilling time. But once New Years rolled around my newly tonsil-less self was starting to feel like myself again. So, my best friend, my boyfriend and I decided to hit the downtown Saratoga, New York, scene to welcome in the new year. We stopped by a few different bars before ultimately settling at a dance club that my boyfriend’s friend works at, who got us in for free. We danced the night away until well after 2024 officially came round. The night felt almost as much of a celebration for the new year as it did a launch party for my post-op return to society, even if it was just my friends and I who felt that way.

The holidays are the perfect time for family reunions and can foster a sense of relaxation. Photo by Virginia Simionato on Unsplash.

The highlight of my winter break was all the nonstop reunions. Family and friends who I had not seen in years came to our house for the holidays. I thought my normally weak social battery would have been drained, if not completely corroded, as the visits were staggered and every day for two weeks I was playing host, driving people to other relatives’ houses or to dreaded tourist destinations that my out-of-town visitors were naturally excited to see. At the end of it all, my heart felt a little tired, but very relaxed, like it had comfortably expanded in the presence of good company. Also, I watched “Saltburn” with my best friend, who I had not seen in two years, on her second day here, and we are mildly traumatized. It was great!

Ice skating is a fun winter outing to pass the time. Photo by Karl Hörnfeldt on Unsplash.

Even though I spent the majority of my winter break ruminating about the looming spring semester, there were some good moments that pulled me out of that temporarily. A great one was ice skating at Bryant Park with my sister. Since neither of us own ice skates, we reserved rentals for 8-9 a.m. since that was the cheapest time slot. I instantly regretted that attempt to save money when the day came, as my sleep schedule during the break wasn’t the best. I was basically nocturnal because sunrise was usually when I closed The Sims 3 or 4 and finally went to bed. Fortunately, my grogginess instantly left once I hit the ice rink and had the most fun I had in weeks. Other things I enjoyed from break were baking, hunting for different food places with my sister and simply being with my family again.

Some people enjoy a getaway to a warmer place during the holiday season, like a cruise. Photo by Alonso Reyes on Unsplash.

Over break, I spent some time recharging from the previous semester. I got to take a week’s trip to Jamaica and the Bahamas on a cruise. The trip was beautiful and getting away from the cold was the best feeling. I got to meet people from across the country and world and made great memories with them. Jet skiing in the Bahamas was definitely the most memorable moment of the trip for me. Before boarding the ship and after docking we stayed in Florida where a lot of my family lives; it’s always great visiting them.  Additionally I did a lot of crocheting over this break. My baby cousin was born and I worked on a baby blanket and hat for her. I was so glad that I could gift her something made with love. I also love the holiday season and was so blessed to spend it with the people I care about.
