What makes APN Nostalgic

What Makes APN Nostalgic

What makes me most nostalgic is listening to music. My family is extremely into music and I was introduced to many different artists and styles of music at a young age. Growing up there was always music playing in my house and during car rides. My brother is a musician and has been in multiple bands varying between rock, heavy metal and punk. My house was always where they would practice, because he needed his drum set and my parents secretly liked to listen in on rehearsals. Some artists that stand out are Stone Temple Pilots, Metallica, Tool, Bon Jovi and Pearl Jam. All of these artists take me back to hanging out with my family at home or going to one of my brothers shows or taking a long car ride for a family vacation. I am so lucky my parents exposed me to so many amazing artists and bands that I can still listen to today.

It’s nippy this morning. I can barely peel the bed sheets off of me, it’s too cold! You would think after the hottest summer in recent history that there would be an aftermath of warmth lingering throughout the beginning of October. How wrong I was, and I’ve never been more excited to be wrong. My bedside window is fogged with cool condensation, making the view of the outside a little blurry. I pull my shirt sleeve over my hand to wipe off the moisture, and I’m greeted with soft rays of golden sun. The trees outside have been graced with autumn’s touch, giving every green leaf hues of red and yellow. As I step outside, the crisp autumn air fills my nostrils with slight notes of charcoal accompanied by a full body shiver. For me, autumn as a whole is nostalgic. Halloween has always been my favorite holiday in my youth as well as the present; thus, fall is my most anticipated part of the year. Autumn’s foliage brings back memories of stepping on crunchy leaves on my way to school, apple picking while all of my siblings were home at the same time and, of course, trick-or-treating. Fall, while colder than summer, is a season of emotional warmth especially when it comes to friends and family. The season reminds you of a simpler time when all of your loved ones were around at your disposal. For me, autumn is nostalgia.

Besides typical holiday traditions, there are two things that make me feel significant nostalgia. The first is somewhat common for many people, and that is music. Certain songs or albums can take me back to specific moments or just general times in my life, and usually that is a positive feeling. The other thing that makes me feel nostalgic are Barbie dolls, but maybe not for the reasons you would think. Sure, I played with them as a child, but I also collected them steadily throughout my early adulthood. I still have some beautiful dolls, expensive pieces that I consider art for their clothing and box designs. They don’t often make these collectible Barbies anymore and when they do, they are usually not within my budget. However, I still love them, and when I look at them I think of those carefree days when I had no other important things to buy and could easily shell out a pretty penny to own a doll I would never play with or remove from its box.
