The teen drama genre in the early to mid 2000s was extremely popular for its lovable characters and its insane and almost unrealistic drama. From the love triangles, the lying, cheating and more, high school has the perfect amount of drama that many find not only interesting but oddly relatable. Everyone has their go-to throwback teen dramas, and here are some of people’s favorites.
1. Pretty little liars
“Pretty Little Liars” is a mystery teen drama that ran from 2010 to 2017 for seven seasons. The show follows the lives of four best friends after one of their friends mysteriously disappeared. One year later the friends receive anonymous text messages from someone named “A” who threatens to expose their darkest secrets.
“This is my favorite show,” says Jayda Harris, a sophomore at SUNY Plattsburgh. “ I couldn’t stop watching. I needed to know who ‘A’ was.”
2. Gossip Girl
“Gossip Girl” is a teen drama that ran from 2007 to 2012 for six seasons. It follows the lives of privileged high schoolers living in Manhattan’s upper east side. As the teens go through day-to-day life, they are anonymously talked about online by someone who calls herself “gossip girl.”
“ The way that ‘Gossip Girl’ used social media to ruin the lives of these teenagers was insane,” senior Kiara Mapp said.
3. Glee
“Glee” is a musical comedy teen drama that ran from 2009 to 2015 for six seasons. The show centers on a high school Glee club called the New Directions, as they deal with social issues such as race, sexuality, family relationships and more.
“Naya Rivera as Santana Lopez is my favorite character on the show,” says Niyah Armstrong, a senior at SUNY Plattsburgh. “ She is the most relatable and hilarious.”
4. The Vampire Diaries
“The Vampire Diaries” is a supernatural teen drama series that ran from 2009 to 2017 for eight seasons. The show follows teen Elena Gilbert as both her parents die and she falls in love with a 162-year-old vampire. Soon after, Elena learns the mystical history of her town and family.
“This show had great storylines and the best villains,” says Michael Johnson, a senior at SUNY Plattsburgh.
5. Teen wolf
“Teen Wolf” is a supernatural teen drama that ran from 2011 to 2017 for six seasons. The show is centered on a high school teen and werewolf, Scott McCall, and his friend group as they defend their town from supernatural threats.
“I love ‘Teen Wolf’ because growing up I enjoyed watching shows that were supernatural,” says Khalil Moore, a senior at SUNY Plattsburgh. “The show takes me away from everyday life and puts me in their supernatural world.”
These throwback teen dramas are great if you’re looking for a night of TV nostalgia. These shows were staples of the 2000s and were loved by many. Whether you like comedy or a supernatural mystery there is a teen drama for you.
